Kelly's Story

by Jacquelyn Farnsworth

The dream of Spinster Sisters Co. was born in 1994 when Kelly Perkins realized that she and her friends needed an alternative to the witches' brew of chemicals that many modern skin care products represent. Research had emerged showing the adverse effects of the antibacterial triclosan, found in many soap products at the time, with the unfortunate potential to effect hormones and create antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Kelly studied up on how to make soap (in a book — this was before the internet!), and made a few batches of cold-process bar soap for Christmas gifts. She had some left over, and stuck her "toe in the water" by signing up for her first craft fair with her sister. They were both unmarried and called themselves Spinster Sisters Co. Kelly couldn’t believe how much soap she sold at the fair to customers who had become more conscious of the ingredients they wanted to avoid in their skin care. Kelly began to dream about leaving her job as a business analyst to start her own skin care company.

In 2004 Kelly met the cutest, smartest and funniest man she could ever have hoped for and got married. (See, Spinster Sisters Co. is a lucky name!) In 2011, she realized that Spinster Sisters was her passion, and decided to get serious and take the leap. That is where the Spinster Sisters story really starts.

Kelly started selling Spinster Sisters Co. products regularly at local markets on the Colorado Front Range in 2011. A year later, she quit the day job as a business analyst and devoted herself to Spinster Sisters full-time. Kelly's favorite part of the business is crafting new product formulations, and so the company grew quickly, incorporating a full range of face, body, bath and shaving products sold in both retail and wholesale channels.

By 2018, Spinster Sisters Co. had grown to operate its own retail store in downtown Golden, Colorado and its products could be found at retailers coast-to-coast. Kelly retrofitted a 7,860 sq. ft. warehouse on the south side of Golden to become the company headquarters and production facility, lovingly referred to as the Spinster Sisters Co. Microsoapery.
